The Ultimate Digital Nomad's Guide to Life in Serbia!

Zdravo! My name is Katherine, and I am a thirty-something Canadian who took a one-way flight to Belgrade, Serbia in January 2024 with nothing more than a checked bag and a carry-on, thinking I'd stay 90 days before exploring a new destination as a Digital Nomad.
Little did I know the incredible and affordable quality of life that awaited me on the other side which would transform me from Expat to Immigrant, and Nomad to Slowmad.
The Covid-19 pandemic totally revolutionized remote work, and made any destination in the world our home office. Working from our laptops poolside on a hotel rooftop (true story!), to quaint cafes and the beaches of the Adriatic Sea, digital nomads experience a life of freedom like never before. So long as we have stable highspeed internet and a reliable power source, that dream is our daily reality.
As incredible as this life is, however, many nomads like myself are getting a bit tired of travelling from place to place after a while. Exploring new countries is a life-changing experience, but eventually, many of us want to find a home base where worrying about visas and overstays becomes a thing of the past.
I learned so much about myself since leaving Canada, and it is through this self-discovery that I now confidently choose Serbia as being that permanant home for me - and to be entirely honest, I have no desire to go back to my country of origin.
I can still travel the world while working remotely, but at this stage in my life, it is reassuring to have a home to come back to. A fixed address, not in Canada. An official Residency Status in the country I feel most at home. For me, that country is - without a doubt - Serbia.
Hvala! I'm excited to stay in touch, and guide you every step of the way!

Not to be mistaken for:
Syria (in the middle east),
Syberia (in Russia),
Slovakia or Slovenia (both central European countries)
Serbia, officially the Republic of Serbia, is a landlocked country in Southeast and Central Europe. Located in the Balkans, it borders Hungary to the north, Romania to the northeast, Bulgaria to the southeast, North Macedonia to the south, Croatia to the northwest, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the west, and Montenegro to the southwest
The capital, Belgrade, is known to be one of the oldest cities in the world!

Yes! From my own experience, Serbia is extraordinarily safe for foreigners and locals, and boasts a very low crime rate! Even if you do not know the Serbian language, people are very helpful.
Of course, it is good to be vigilant no matter where you live or travel, I have felt safer as a woman walking alone at night in Belgrade than I did in Windsor, Ontario Canada.

If you are a digital nomad working for a North American based company that is in EST, their 3:00am is your 9:00am in CET. This enables your company to offer 24 hour service (such as an IT helpdesk) while allowing work-life balance globally. By being in Serbia, the salary you are paid will stretch so much further here than it would with the high cost of living in North America.
Serbia is not an EU Member State (I talk [HERE] about why I feel it shouldn't be!), and the currency is the Serbian Dinar (RSD), although for larger (informal) cash transactions are occasionally done in Euros.
Essentially, you get the modern quality of life and convenience you'd expect from other European countries, without the EU price tag. That means, as a remote worker, your foreign income stretches much further in the Serbian economy than it would in countries that use the Euro.
